New World Rhythm Revival

May 7-9, 2007.  Right after May Fire in the Vegas Vortex (www.vegasvortex.com)

New World Rhythmatism is a collaborative approach to community percussion, dance, and chant that utilizes a shared set of calls, gestures, and generalized frameworks to create refined group improvisations. Each individual in the ensemble acts as both leader and follower, applying NWR methods to co-produce complex musical ideas and group choreography that spontaneously unfold over the course of each session.

This gathering will be an opportunity for Rhythmatists to share, explore, learn, and teach together.

Mornings will be open, but we suggest walks at the wetlands, rejuvenating meditation, and lots of hand-holding, eye-gazing connection with friends.

Afternoon and evening sessions will include:

1)       introduction to NWR methods for dancers and drummers who are new to the practice

2)       open NWR sessions where we will all play, celebrate, challenge, empower, and create ineffable beauty together

3)       focused NWR sessions where we will grow new skills, refine old ones, and plant new seeds of inspiration

4)       opportunities for questions, discussion, feedback, and collective dreaming

Tentative Schedule:

2:00-5:00pm. afternoon sessions

5:00-7:00pm. dinner break

7:00-10:00pm. evening sessions

Joshua and Deborah will host a dinner for all Rhythmatists on Wednesday evening.

Participants will be responsible for coordinating the rest of their meals.  You can bring food with you, or you can go out to a local restaurant.

All workshops and sessions will be held at our intimate Rhythmtree Studio.

Accommodations: If you would like, we will try to help you find someone to stay with for Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights. Contact Rhonda K, at 702-460-9261, or planetRhonda@gmail.com for help.

In addition to finding accommodations with a local, there are many cost effective hotels in Vegas.

Cost for Revival: $20!!!! Just get yourself to Vegas.

While the cost is low, the space for this gathering is very limited.

Prerequisites: These requirements are simply a way of making sure that we are all properly prepared to have fun and get maximum growth out of our time together.

All participants will need to have read through the guidebook to NWR. If you do not have a book, you can purchase one for $15.00 (if necessary, shipping is included), from Joshua: joshua@mythfits.com.

Drummers will need to:

  1. Possess your own instrument: we will be working with: doumbeks, tombaks, darboukas, frame drums, rebola, tan-tan, tabla, and possibly conga. Contact us if you wish to play other instruments. We will have some instruments and additional percussion to share.
  2. Be able to produce clear and consistent tones on your instrument.
  3. Keep solid time (ability to play the core rhythms smoothly with a metronome).
  4. Be familiar with the rhythms: Beladi, Gawazee, Malfuuf, Chiftitelli (in addition to their inclusion in the guidebook, audio of these rhythms are available at www.mythfits.com).

Dancers will have attended a bellydance / middle-eastern dance class for at least two months. (NWR is not limited to this dance style, but we will be working from this foundation at the gathering). In addition, dancers will also need to be familiar with the rhythms: Beladi, Gawazee, Malfuuf, and Chiftitelli (in addition to their inclusion in the guidebook, audio of these rhythms are available at www.mythfits.com).
